In the reading a young man finds peacefulness in the wilderness. The document opens with the author being a coporate stuff. He has worked hard to achieve his social status in sees little adventure in journeying out in the wild to watch for forest fires. It becomes ironic however, when a co-worker chooses to work in the wilderness watching for forest fires. She eventually convinces the author into coming down and joining her in her riveting expedition. Once he arrives he in the wilderness he becomes entranced with the beauty of the wild. He falls in love immediately and doesn't want to leave. He decides that for the next 12 years he will continue to come back down to the forest preserve during the summer and watch for fires. A relevating experience he says that he never would have expected. The author never regrets his decision to go out into the wild and he frolics in the beauty he now lives within. When he does encounter a fire he handles the situation in an expert fashion. "We stopped the fire at 25 acres, without careful provision it could have been more like 20,000." A quote that shows the expertise excuted by the author during the emergency. His views on the wild resemble that of Ralph Emerson in that they both depict nature as a place of tranquility. Ralph Emerson speaks of nature as a young man would recite the details of his first baseball game. Ralph Emerson expresses this in the quote,“Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air.” In this quote Mr. Emerson announces his views about the bountifulness of nature and how he feels a person ought to enjoy nature. It's almost as if he saying to be one with nature.
